Abstract: LAGUERTA, EDELMA EDELYN GENOVAIA, Influence of Fruit Thinning on Three Honeydew Cultivars, Undergraduate Thesis major in Horticulture, Cavite State University Indang, Cavite, April 2005. Adviser: Dr. Arnulfo C. Pascual Three honeydew cultivars were evaluated to determine their yield and fruit quality as affected by fruit thinning, specifically it aimed to: identify the most acceptable honeydew cultivar for local cultivation; determine the most suitable number of fruits to be retained; and prepare a simple cost and return analysis on honeydew melon production. The study was conducted in Central Experiment Station Greenhouse No. 2 from November 2004 to February 2005. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design arranged in Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with the three honeydew cultivars as the main plots and four thinning techniques as the sub-plots. The three cultivars tested showed significant difference in fruit weight when the number of fruits was limited to one to two fruits per plant. Moreover, higher profits were obtained when two to all fruits per plant were maintained. In terms of consumers' preference with respect to appearance, texture, taste, aroma, and flavor, Honey Brew ranked first, followed by Golden Prize while Sweet World is the least accepted.
