Abstract: DARIA, DJOANA OCAMPO. Characteristics of Labor Force in CALABARZON. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management - Major in Economics. Cavite State University Imus, Cavite, March 2009. Adviser: Mr. Gilchor P. Cubillo. This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of labor force in CALABARZON. Specifically, the study aimed to 1) determine the profile of the employed based on age, gender, educational attainment, industry group, occupational group and class of worker; 2) determine the gender ratio of the employed when grouped according to class of worker; 3) determine the profile of the unemployed based on age, gender and educational attainment; 4) determine the profile of the underemployed based on gender; 5) compare the employment status of region 4A and region 4B; and 6) compare the employment status of CALABARZON from 2004 to 2008. Data used were secondary data taken from the results of the April 2008 Labor Force Survey. Likewise, data from the April 2004, April 2005, April 2006 and April 2007 Labor Force Surveys were also used but were limited only to comparing it with the results of the April 2008 result. Majority of the employed are male and high school graduates that belonged to the age group of 25-39. Many are laborers and unskilled workers in the industry of wholesale and retail trade, repair and sale of motor vehicles, motorcycles and household goods. Male had greater ratio than female when working for private households and establishments. Female had greater ratio when working as unpaid family worker. Majority of the unemployed are male and high school graduates which belonged to the 15 to 24 age group. Most unemployed looked for jobs by directly approaching the employers. Majority of the underemployed were male. Region 4A had more employed persons than Region 4B. The former, however, had lower employment rate than the latter. Employed persons in CALABARZON mostly belong to the age group of 25 to 34 while in MIMAROPA, their employed were mostly 35 to 44. Both regions' employed labor force was mainly composed of males. CALABARZON employed was mostly composed of high school graduates while MIMAROPA employed was mostly composed of elementary graduates. Unemployed persons in CALABARZON were higher than that of MIMAROPA as well as the unemployment rate. Unemployed in CALABARZON were composed mainly of persons aged 25 to 34 while MIMAROPA unemployed labor force was composed mainly of age 15 to 24. Unemployed gender was almost male for both regions. High school graduates were the majority of the unemployed in CALABARZON while in MIMAROPA; it was mostly composed of college graduates and higher. Underemployed persons were higher in CALABARZON than in MIMAROPA but when it comes to underemployment rate, MIMAROPA posted a larger rate. Under employed for both regions were mostly males. From 2004 to 2008, employed persons registered highest in 2007 as well as the employment rate. Unemployment was high in 2004 while underemployment was at its peak in 2006 and lowest in 2008. In 2004, employed were mostly composed of age 25 to 34. This age group was also the highest among the employed in 2005 but their share to total employed declined. From 2006 to 2008, labor force that belongs to age 25 to 34 was the highest population among the employed in CALABARZON. From 2004 to 2008, employed population was mostly composed of males. High school graduates were always the largest share among the employed in CALABARZON from 2004 to 2008. Unemployed were composed mainly of age 15 to 24 from 2004 to 2008 and dominated by males in the span of five years. High school graduates were also the largest among the unemployed from 2004 to 2008. Underemployed were mostly males.
