Abstract: PEJI, MA.LORETTA R. Manpower Needs of Selected Firms in Santa Rosa Laguna. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Economics. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2006.Adviser: Dr. Luzviminda A. Rodrin. The study was designed to describe the profile of selected firms in Santa Rosa Laguna; describe the characteristics of manpower of selected firms; determine the factors considered in the recruitment and hiring of workers for different positions; determine the personality characteristics of workers for the different position; determine the skills requirements of workers for the different position, and identify the problems encountered by selected firms. The study was conducted in Santa Rosa Laguna. Seventy-five selected firms were used as respondents of the study- Data were gathered through personal interviews with the aid of the prepared questionnaire. Frequency count, mean, range, percent, and ranking were used to present the profile of selected firms, characteristics of existing manpower, the factors considered in recruitment and hiring of manpower and the problems encountered by selected firms on manpower recruitment. The number of years of operation of selected firms was 25 years, most firms were managed under corporate form of business organization and had 40 percent Filipino and 60 percent foreign equity. Forty percent of the respondents belonged to manufacturing industry, with an average of PhP25.19 million initial capitalization and with an estimated operating capital ofPhP12.1 million. The average member of manpower by position were nine for executives, 19 for managers, 13 for supervisors, 47 for rank and file and 642 for production workers. The training given by the firms on rank and file was leadership training. For production workers they gave training on machine operation/handling machine. Mostly, the existing manpower were graduates of engineering. The status of appointment of the manpower by position showed that the executive, managerial, supervisory, rank and file and production workers were permanent in their job. The factors considered by firms in recruitment and hiring of manpower were age, educational qualification of NBA/MS degree holder for executives and at least with IVTBA/ MS unit for managers. For supervisory and rank and file, firms preferred BS/AB graduates while for production workers they preferred college graduates. The skills required by position were human skills for the executives and management position, technical skills for supervisory, rank and file and for production workers. The major problems encountered in recruitment and hiring of manpower were lack of qualified applicants.
