Adviser: Mrs. Evelyn Del Mundo This study was conducted at the Cavite State University, College of Nursing with the total of 110 level IV nursing students for the academic year 2008 - 2009 who were handling patients in the hospital. Specifically, it aimed to identify the factors affecting the communication skills of the respondents; to determine the level of competency of the fourth year nursing students; to determine the relationship of the factors affecting communication skills and the level of competency of fourth year nursing students in the delivery of patient care. This study was conducted from June 2008 to February 2009. The study was conducted using descriptive method in a non experimental approach. The main statistical tools used in this study were frequency, distribution, mean, standard deviation, and Spearman Ranked Correlation Coefficient with tables and figures used to interpret and present the data. Findings of the study revealed that the factors motivation, knowledge, conversational management, adaptability, empathy, conversational involvement and appropriateness highly affects communication skills of the respondents. Evidence suggested that the fourth year nursing students had an average level of competency which had led to the conclusion that factors affecting communication skills is not significant to the level of competency of the fourth year nursing students in the delivery of patient care.
