MAGSINO, ANALITA R. DEL MUNDO. Testing and Evaluation of Herb Production Practices. Doctoral Dissertation. Doctor of Philosophy in Farming Systems. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2005. Adviser: Dr. Lorenzo C. Lapitan, Jr.
Growth and yield of sweet basil, ((Ocimum basilicum), Mexican tarragon (Tagetes lucida), and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) as affected by culture system and growing media were evaluated by conducting an on-station experiment at Cavite State University. A set of recommended herb production practices was formulated based on the said experiment and this was tested and evaluated on-farm in Banaba Lejos, Indang, Cavite. Opportunities and constraints in the introduction of herbs to the production system of the farming households in the said barangay were identified.
Four culture systems, namely: sheltered containerized, sheltered raised bed, open containerized, and open raised bed culture, and three growing media, namely: enriched garden soil, soil-based organic mix, and soilless organic mix were considered in the study.
Experiment 1 revealed significant differences on height increment, number of shoot, root-shoot ratio, dry matter production, shoot yield, oil content, and oil yield.
Overall growth characteristics of the three herbs were significantly better under open
condition than under sheltered or nethouse condition. Sweet basil and tarragon exhibited better growth performance and higher yield (harvested shoots and essential oil) per plant in open raised bed culture system while rosemary grew more favorably in open containerized culture system. The effects of growing media were evident only in height increment and number of shoots of the three herbs, However, relatively better growth, higher oil content per unit weight of leaves, and higher shoot and oil yields per plant were noted using soil-containing mixes.
The farmers of Banaba Lejos, Indang, Cavite have a positive attitude toward new crops and new technology. They have very little knowledge of exotic herb species and their culture.
Following a set of recommended cultural practices generated in the on-station experiment, Experiment 2 which involved herb production trial in Banaba Lejos revealed that sweet basil, tarragon, and rosemary can be productively grown in the barangay.
