Abstract: SANCHEZ, JUVY, B. "Motivations, Interests, Leadership Qualities and Academic Performance of Pupils in the District of Trece Martires City, Cavite." Master of Arts in Education major in Educational Management, Cavite State University, Indang Cavite. October 2014. Adviser: Dr. Liza C. Costa. This research work dealt with the academic motivations, interests, and leadership qualities of the 478 intermediate (Grades 4-6) homogeneous and heterogeneous grouped pupils. The variables considered were the socio-demographic characteristics in which include age, sex, grade level, family income, parents' educational attainment, and type of class grouping, the academic profile of the respondents in terms of academic motivations, interests, leadership quality, and academic performance. This study utilized descriptive correlational research design which compared the respondents' socio demographic characteristics, type of class grouping, motivation, interest, leadership qualities, and academic performance. Findings revealed that majority of the pupil-participants were highly motivated, with high leadership qualities, and interests in English, Mathematics, Science, Filipino, Civic and Culture, and Practical Arts. In addition, there was no significant difference between the homogeneous and heterogeneous class groupings in terms of interests, motivation, and leadership qualities. No significant difference was also found between the socio-demographic profile as to academic motivation and interest. Significant difference was found between family income and parents’ highest educational background. Furthermore, findings of this study revealed that no significant relationship exists between the extent of academic motivations and their interests; however, significant relationship exists between the academic motivations of the pupil-participants and their interest and leadership qualities in English, Mathematics, Science, Filipino, Civic and Culture, and Practical Arts. The study concluded that the socio- demographic characteristics of the pupil-participants in terms of age, sex, grade level, family income, and educational attainment of parents had in one way, or another makes differences in pupils' motivation, interest, and leadership qualities. However, it is second only to teaching among school-related factors in its impact on student learning. In this regard, motivation, interest, and leadership quality of pupils can be enhanced by setting directions — charting a clear course activity that everyone understands, establishing high expectations and using data to track progress and performance. This implies that it is natural for young children to be active and attentive as they direct their energy and attention to activities that they found interesting. They are motivated by interest. They are wholly absorbed in activities where they enjoy. The key aspect for the educators is to teach their pupils effectively so that they may be motivated and interested, develop, and enhance leadership qualities and academic performance. It is therefore recommended that revisions and/or modifications be made on the least interested activities found in each subject. The study also recommends to consider factors such as socio-demographic characteristics, academic profile, and types of class groupings of pupils in planning classroom activities and strategies in teaching that will provide opportunities to all pupils to arrive at their fullest potential in learning and performance. Provision of supplemental school programs, specifically, instructional materials and enrichment activities, are also recommended to boost pupils' academic performance and interest in learning.
