Abstract: DAIGO, CEZAR T. and GUERRA, LERIZZA T. Bamboo as Fiber Reinforcement in Concrete. Undergraduate Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite April 2008. Thesis Adviser: Engr. Rico Asuncion. The study was conducted to produce concrete using bamboo as fiber reinforcement. Specifically, it was undertaken to determine the appropriate design mixture and proportion, the compressive and flexural strength of concrete at 7, 14, and 28 days curing. It also aimed to determine the least cost mixture of concrete using bamboo as fiber reinforcement and if the bamboo fiber is feasible in producing fiber reinforced concrete. The different tests were performed to determine the effects of bamboo fiber to the concrete were the slump test, compression test and flexural test. The results showed that almost all of the treatment got their highest flexural strength at their 28th day curing period as compared to the 7th and 14th day curing period except treatments 5 and 3 which got their highest flexural strength on their 7th day curing period. It is also observed that treatments 2 and 4 shows proportional increase of strength to the number of days of curing unlike the three other treatments. Treatments 1, 3 and 5 got their weakest compression strength at their 14th day of curing. From the gathered data, it showed that mix proportion affects the strength of concrete both compression and flexural. From this study, it showed that instead of increasing the compressive and flexural strength of concrete, the addition of bamboo fibers decreases the capacity. It also decreases the workability of mixture, as shown in the slum test result. These results revealed that bamboo fiber cannot be used as fiber reinforcement in concrete.
