Abstract: CULAS, RISSA LYN N. and SARAZA, JOSSA MAE G. Life Challenges, Roles, Types of Discipline and Job Opportunities of Houseparents in Selected Institutions for Children. Undergraduate Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Ms. Merlie C. Nahilat The study was conducted from December 2018 to March 2019 to selected residential institutions for children. This study aimed to determine the life challenges, roles, types of discipline and job opportunities of the houseparents in selected residential institutions for children. Specifically, the objectives of the study are the following: 1.) determine the demographic profile of the houseparents in terms sex, civil status, occupational status, income, educational attainment, number of children under in care, and number of years working in the institutions; 2.) evaluate the effectiveness of the houseparents on the specific roles as caregiver, tutor, second parent, and household manager; 3.) identify the life challenges of the houseparents in selected residential institutions for children; 4.) determine the types of discipline they apply in handling the children; and 5.) determine the work opportunities related to their job. The study used purposive sampling in order to come up with five (5) agencies namely; Mother Theresa Spineli's Treasure in Tagaytay City, Children's Joy Foundation Inc. in Calamba, Laguna. Ang Bahay Parola Mission to the World Philippines, Grace Home in Bacoor, Cavite, Ang Bahay Parola Mission to the World Philippines, Peace Home in Sta. Rosa Laguna, and IFL Integrated Community Development Ministries, Inc. in Cabuyao Laguna. The result showed and discussed about the demographic profile of the participants. Majority of the participants were female houseparents with only one male who was interviewed. In terms of civil status, majority of the participants were single, while others was married. Most of the participants are college graduates followed by the high school graduates and the least of the houseparents took up vocational course. The occupational status of the participants result to 100%, all of them are working full time because of the great demand or need of the institution. The incomes of the participants are provided by the institutions. In terms of number of years working in the institutions, most of the participants has 74% with the total number of seventeen (17) participants that have five (5) years below of experiences while 26% or six (6) participants has six (6) to ten (10) years of experiences. The result showed that the effectiveness of the houseparents in the specific roles as caregiver is meet standard or they do the specific roles oftentimes with the mean of 3.20, act as tutor is above standards or they always do the said roles with the mean 3.59, act as second parent is above standard with the mean of 3.77, and being household manager is above standard with the mean of 3.49. The effectiveness of the of the houseparent on the specific roles as caregiver, tutor, second parent and household manager has an overall above standard evaluation with the total mean of 3.59 and a standard deviation of 0.59. Life challenges of the houseparents were identified as: mixed emotion, difficulty in handling behavior, discipline requires patience and progression, and fulfilling and helped them renew their lives. Based from the results, the types discipline of the participants to the children includes providing counseling, removing privileges and discussing rules of discipline, praying for the children, realization and giving rewards to the children. As stated, houseparents received benefits and enjoyed opportunities like attending trainings and seminars that really helpful to their work especially to help the children who also need their help to grow and develop their selves. As for the benefits, the institutions give and provide the needs of the houseparent such as shelter, food, and clothes. Houseparents' insurance benefits are also shouldered by their institution.
