Abstract: SABALDICA, MIREJE N. Microfinance Operations of Selected Financial Institutions in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Economics. Cavite State University Indang, Cavite. April 2008. Adviser: Prof. Cecilia T. Cayao. The work in this paper explored the microfinance operations of selected financial institutions in Cavite and was an attempt to determine the profile of the respondent financial institutions and their clients; present the financial and non-financial services offered by the selected financial institutions in Cavite; determine the management practices of the selected financial institutions in Cavite with respect to its information system and accounting methods; and determine the problems encountered by the selected financial institutions in Cavite on their microfinance operations. The study used the qualitative or descriptive type of research to answer the above problems, citing data and information obtained from the answers of selected microfinance institution's key officials/staff on the questionnaire. Data gathered were summarized using statistical tools such as frequency count, arithmetic mean, range, ranking and percentage. Results from the study showed that the microfinance institutions across Cavite are providing broad range of financial and non- financial services but the primary business of most of them is provision of loans. In terms of management practices, majority of the respondent MFIs have efficient management of information and accounts. Nevertheless, it is still necessary to have closer monitoring to minimize problems in liquidation and updates of information. Findings in the study also revealed that respondent MFIs were not so committed to reach the most number of people belonging to the poorer segments of the population. An outstanding gap, therefore, is the unwillingness of several MFIs to provide finance services to a greater number of poor clients which is basically, the principle of microfinance. Thus, it was concluded that microfinance tends to become more of a business rather than a poverty alleviation tool. The study had also shown that the most common problem being faced by the MFIs is the loan repayment of their clients. To resolve this, the study suggests that MFIs invest in conducting series of capacity building program for their clients to help them in building their intellectual, social, and financial capital thus, help them in stabilizing their economic and social status which could lead to the increase of savings and loan repayment rates on the long run. Building network with the government and donor institutions was also recommended to assist MFIs in expanding their technical and financial resources and to help them extend to a larger clientele.
