Abstract: CRUZ, JOVELYN S. Income and Expenditure of Single Parents in Selected Areas of Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Economics. Cavite State University. Indang, Cavite. April 2006. Adviser: Dr. Luzviminda A. Rodrin. A study was conducted to provide information on the income and expenditure of single parents in selected areas of Cavite_ Specifically, this study aimed to: describe the socio-economic profile of single parents in selected areas of Cavite; determine the sources of income of single parents in selected areas of Cavite; determine the level of income and expenditure of single parents in selected areas of Cavite; determine the share of different expenditure items on family income; and identify the problems encountered by single parents in the allocation of their income to various expenditure items. Personal interviews were conducted with 125 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Descriptive statistical tools such as frequency count, mean, range, percentage and rank were used to answer the objectives of the study. Findings of the study revealed that most of the respondents had children attending school suggesting that respondents incurred large expenses for education. Majority of the single parents were self-employed. Vending was the primary form of business engaged in by the respondents. The annual gross income of single parents ranged from PhP24, 000 to PhP348, 000 with an average of PhP 121,719 in 2005. The computed average annual net income of the respondents was more than PhP 10,000 which implies that very low savings was left to single parents after the deduction of some relevant household expenses. Some of the single parents had net loss of Php200 to Php5, 190 which indicates that single parents were not earning enough money to support their family and were not living comfortably with their earnings. Food had the highest share of expenditure on family income followed by education then fuel, light and water then transport and communication. This suggests that aside from food, single parents regard education and transport and communication as a necessary part of household expenditure. However, the lowest shares of expenditure on family income were cigarettes, household furnishings and equipment, and recreation which could be explained by the fact that cigarettes, household furnishings and equipment, and recreation were considered as luxury or unnecessary expenditure. On the whole, single parents are undoubtedly one of the most disadvantaged groups in society. Findings have revealed that single parenthood is associated with greater poverty risk than among other families with children. Once in work, single parents can secure no more than one earned income to support their families.
