Abstract: VICEDO, CORNELIUS S. Determinants of Success in Qualifying Examinations of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy Students in Selected Private and Public Schools in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management, major in Marketing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2008. Adviser: Prof Roderick M. Rupido. A study was conducted to determine the factors that affect the success in qualifying examinations of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy students in selected private and public schools in Cavite. Specifically, it aimed to: describe the socio-economic characteristics of the BS Accountancy students who took the qualifying examination in selected private and public schools in Cavite; identify the people who influenced the students to take the course; determine the study habits and academic preparation of the students before taking the qualifying examination; determine whether there is a significant relationship between socio-economic characteristics of BS Accountancy students and their qualifying examination ratings; and determine whether there is a significant relationship between school-related characteristics of BS Accountancy students and their qualifying examination ratings. Results showed that college students who passed qualifying examinations for admission in the BS Accountancy program were generally female, single, and started their first year of college in the same school. They made their own decisions in choosing the course they wanted to pursue in college. Self-testing, reviewing regularly, and studying thoroughly were the most common practices of students who were successful in passing qualifying examinations for BS Accountancy. Successful passers in qualifying examinations did nothing except to focus on studying as preparation for the examination and studied one to two days before taking the examination particularly in the evening. Likewise, they could only study more effectively when they were alone. Classroom was chosen by students as the most suitable place for studying in school campus. Also, there is generally no place outside the home and school campus that college students find most suitable for studying. Most of the college students who succeeded in qualifying examinations for BS Accountancy program were either eldest or middle child in their families, belonged to low family income groups and had mothers or fathers who were college graduates. High significant relationship existed between weekly school allowance and qualifying examination ratings of students in the BS Accountancy program. Students with lower weekly school allowances performed much better in qualifying examinations than those with high weekly allowances. Significant relationship was found between the grade point average of students prior to examination and qualifying examination ratings in the BS Accountancy program. Students who obtained high ratings in qualifying examinations also obtained good grades prior to examination.
