Abstract: DECLARO, G. G. Status of Information Technology (IT) Firms in the Philippines. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite, Bachelor of Science in Business Management Major in Marketing, October 2010. Adviser: Prof. Roderick M. Rupido. A study was conducted to describe the market structure, conduct and performance of Information Technology (IT) firms in the Philippines, analyze the structures in terms of seller concentration, product and services differentiation, barriers to entry, and barriers to exit; find out the competitive practices employed by IT companies in the Philippines; and examine the performance of the IT companies with regards to sales, income, assets, liabilities and equity. Descriptive research method specifically documentary analysis was employed. Published studies from different local articles and reports from books and journals were collected. Secondary data and information were gathered from annual reports and journals with studies on the Philippine IT industry with regards to the market structure, conduct and performance of IT companies in the Philippines. It was found out the IT industry is composed of many players. Each sector performed differently. Gini coefficient revealed that the sectors in the IT industry were shared by many firms in terms of net sales. The industry was made up of many players with each firm sharing grounds on the market. The position of top ten IT firms in the Philippines was reshuffled during the year 2009. Although there were exchanges in their spots, the same companies were recorded as the top ten firms in the Philippines. Business acquisitions, partnerships, mergers and joint venturing were the common practices being employed by the IT firms in the Philippines. Among the five sectors, software, IT services and ICT enabled services were the good performers in terms of sales and income. Hardware sector experience losses on its sales but managed to increase its income. The electronics sector turned out to be the poorest performer in the industry although the top performer belonged to the electronics sector. It was recommended to pursue a study regarding this topic on a broader scope to give clearer description of the industry in the Philippines as this study focused only on hardware, electronics telecommunications and networking, software and ICT enabled services sectors of the industry. Conducting studies that will include all the sectors may give a different look on the IT industry in the Philippines as this study focused only on five sectors of the industry Time is very essential on the study regarding this topic due to the industry’s fast pace on changes, developments and improvements. Thus, the proponents recommended a study to be done in different time frames.
