PANGANIBAN, LORNA VICEDO, "A Study on Production and Marketing of Anthurium in Selected Towns of Cavite , Thesis , Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, major in Agricultural Economics, Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite, April 1993. Adviser: Dr. Maria A. Ersando .
The study aimed to 1) determine the socio—economic characteristics of anthurium growers; 2) determine the production and marketing practices of anthurium; 5) determine the cost and return of anthurium growing; 4) identify the factors that affect the size of profit and 5) identify the problems encountered by anthurium growers .
The study was conducted in selected towns of Cavite .
A total of 46 respondents were the source of information for this study.
The mean age of the respondents was 44 years. Majority reached college level of education. The average number of dependents was two the number of earning family members also averaged to two. All of them were owner—operators.
They considered anthurium production as minor enterprise e The average number of years in anthurium growing was 2.61 and the average number of family members involved in
anthurium growing was 2.
The size of land devoted to anthurium production ranged from 10 sq. m. to 500 sq. m with an average of 85.54 sq. m. The average initial amount of investment by the growers was V2 , 674 and average present capital amounted to , 795. Majority of the respondents used their personal savings to finance their anthurium project , The majority of growers procured their planting materials from Los Banos, Alfonso and Indang
Most of the respondents selected coconut husk and pots as a medium for anthurium production. All of them used nets as shading materials for the cut flower. Most of them watered the plants 2—5 times a day. All of them used commercial fertilizer such as urea and dithiane and they controlled pests and diseases with insecticides and fungi cides.
Half of the respondents sold their cut flower soon after harvesting to maintain its freshness. Most respondents sold their cut flower at the farm or home for convenience. Majority of the respondents were responsible with the pricing system of their products, most of the buyers purchase anthurium for resale and paid them in cash. Most of the respondents depended on other farmers for information about the selling price of anthurium. Market outlets were chosen for convenience, higher price and being a regular buyer. All of them sort the cut flowers and removed the rejected ones before they were marketed.
Attendance to seminars/ trainings on cut flower producti013 volume of production as indicated by the number of flowers and total operating cost were found to be significantly related to profitability of anthurium production.
The problems encountered by the respondents were the occurrence of pest and diseases, high cost of inputs, in adequate market out Lets and fluctuation of price.
It was found that anthurium production has comparatively.
high potential in terms of financial return per unit area, thus, anthurium growing is suitable for backyard Livelihood projects that would benefit many individuals.
To improve the production of anthurium in Cavite, the growers should increase up to a certain extent, the land/ area devoted to cut flower and they should be assisted on how to prevent or minimize the occurrence of pest and diseases
|
