DIHAN, GENNY VIC A., Biological Activities of Dichloromethane Bark Extract of Lumbang (Aleurites moluccana). Undergraduate Thesis. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. October 2012, Adviser: Dr. Chester Joshua V. Saldafia,

The study was carried out to determine the biological activities of the dichloromethane bark extract of Aleurites molucana. Bioassay, namely antimicrobial assay, carrageenan- induced peritonitis for assessment of anti-inflammatory activity, hypoglycemic activity test and brine shrimp lethality were used.

Exudates from the peritoneal cavity of mice is characterized by protein-rich fluid accumulation and leukocytes infiltration which was evident after 24 hours of carrageenan induced peritonitis. The WBC count significantly lower in Aleurites molucana bark extract (12.0 x103/ul) treated group when compared to the number of cells of the negative control (16.3 x 103ml) group but not as significant when compared to diclofenac (7.8 x 103/111). Same observation was noted for neutrophil count relative to positive and negative control. In hypoglycemic activity, after oral glucose tolerance test using 20% glucose Aleurites moluccana bark extract significantly decreased with percent reduction of 23.37% blood glucose after 30 minutes.

Cytotoxic activity was exhibited by Aleurites moluccana bark extract with 100% and 95.19% mortality after exposure to 1000 ug/ml and exposure 100 ug/ml, respectively.
The lethal dose 50 (LDso) was established at 10 ug/ml (60.27 %). Moreover, Aleurites moluccana bark extract displayed intermediate anti-bacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. .Resistance was observed for Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aureginosa and Bacillus subtilis when compared to tetracycline (positive control). Weak antifunganl activity against Candida tropicalis and Aspergillus niger was noted relative to positive control (nystatin).

Result of the study indicates that the dichloromethane extract of Aleurites molucana bark has significant anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic antibacterial and cytotoxic activity. This indicates that there are basis for the popularity of this plant as herbal medicine, This may be attributed to bioactive compounds of the bark extracts of Aleurites molucana such as glycosides, saponins, phenolic compounds and tannins. |
