BATILES, ELLEN GRACE M., Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2009. Antibiotic Sensitivitv Profile of Salmonella spp. isolates in the gallbladder of chicken (Gallus doinesticus, Lim) from a Dressing Plant in Trece Martirez City, Cavite. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Adviser. Chester Joshua V. Salmi DVM

The study was conducted to determine the antibiotic sensitivity profile of Salmonella spp, isolates in two hundred chicken gallbladder samples taken fern a dressing plant in Trece Martirez City, Cavite. One hundred and sixty five colonies were isolated from Lysine Desoxycholate agar or XLD and were characterized culturally appearing as red colonies with or without black centers.

These isolates were characterized morphologically and 157 were gram negative and rod shaped orgy inns_ Biochemically, the isolates was found to possess the following Salmonella spp., reactions: Oxidate TiPoative, alkaline slant and acid butt with hydrogen sulfide and gas formation on Triple Iron Sum (TS1) agar, produces hvdrogen sulfate and having negative results on Indole and shows motility on Sulfide Indole Motility (SIM) Methyl Red positive and Voues-Proskaeur test neffative_ positive for both Citrate and Nitrate WEm tests and negative for the Urease and Gelatinase tests. The isolate also fermented u tic k.lse and maltose but not lactose. The isolate was considered as PresumPlive Sdlizonella spp., and were further tested serologic ally using Polyvalent 0 (A-1) and Vi and Vi antiserum.

Results showed that one isolate agglutinated the Polyvalent 0 (A-1)) amd Vi antiserum and negative Vi agglutination. The isolate was found to be susceptible ciprofloxacin, fosfomycin, amoxicillin, gentamycin, trimeghoprim-sulfamethoxazole, doxvcycline and cephalothin but were resistant to lincomvcin. Intermediate result was observed from nitrofurantoin. The isolation rate of Salmonella spp., in the gallbladder of chickens from a dressing plant in Trece Martirez City, Cavite, was found to be 0.6%.

Regardless of its low result proper handling and processing should always be observed and followed to avoid accidental cross-contamination from the giblets to carcass to ensure public safety and that indiscriminate usage of antibiotics be avoided
|
