Abstract: AGUILAR, HERMESON M., and NOEL MICHAEL CHRISTIAN V., Design and Development of an Amplified Digital Electronic Stetho-Sphyg (Stethoscope-Sphygmomanometer). Undergraduate Design Project. Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2006. Adviser: Eng. Edwin R. Arboleda. The Design and Development of an Amplified Digital Electronic Stetho-Sphyg was conducted at Brgy. Bancod 1 and Brgy. Calumpang Cerca, Indang, Cavite. The design project is designed for measuring heart rate and blood pressure, and for studying the heart conditions, respiratory conditions and bowel conditions. The design project was guided by the following objectives: to design and construct an electronic stethoscope circuit that can amplify the heartbeat, respiratory and bowel sounds; to design and construct a digital sphygmomanometer that will display the measured heart rate on a seven-segment TED display, and blood pressure level on LCD; to test and evaluate the device; and to determine the cost of the device. The design project was composed of electronic stethoscope and digital sphygmomanometer. The electronic stethoscope was designed to hear and study heartbeat sounds, respiratory sounds and bowel sounds. It was designed based on the existing circuit of microphone amplifiers. It employed with a low-pass filter in order to pass the low frequency body sounds, and to attenuate background noises. The digital sphygmomanometer is the significant part of the device. It is use for measuring blood pressure level and heart rate that will be displayed on an LCD and in a -digit LED display, respectively. Evaluation of the device took place-at- the -Infirmary of the Cavite. State University on March 03, 2006. The device was evaluated on its accuracy to measure blood pressure level and heart rate. Three medical staffs measured the blood pressure level and heart rate of the ten respondents twice using the conventional stethoscope and sphygmomanometer. The. proponents measured again the heart rate and blood pressure level of the ten respondents twice using the design project. Using the method Analysis of Variance, it was found out that the device measured the blood pressure level and heart rate inaccurately_ The proponents analyzed the factors that may have caused the device to measure inaccurately. Another evaluation was conducted at the DCEE building of the Cavite State University. Based on the analysis of the results of the second evaluation, the device can measure the blood pressure level and heart rate accurately.
