Abstract: BALDO, MELANNE A., LIGSA, JENNILYN V., and REYES, JANICE C. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, October 2004. “Factors Associated with Learning Difficulties in Algebra_of Sophomore Students at Constancio E. Aure_ Sr. National High School.” Adviser: Dr, Lorna L. Penales. The study was conducted to determine the student and teacher factors associated with learning difficulties in Algebra of Sophomore students at Constancio E. Aure Sr. National High School, Asis, Mendez, Cavite during the school year 2004-2005. Specifically the study sought to determine the: 1). profile of sophomore students in terms of age, gender, parents educational attainment, parents occupation, attitudes towards Algebra, students’ perception of the teachers performance and their attitude towards work and performance 2). profile of teachers in terms of gender, age, length of service and experience, highest educational attainment, teaching methods frequently used, their perception on their attitude towards work and performance as she viewed herself: 3). relationship between the student-related factors with the learning difficulties in Algebra; and 4). relationship between the students learning difficulties in Algebra and the Teacher- related factors. The study made use of a descriptive- correlational method in analyzing the data. The following instruments were used in the study: separate questionnaires for the teacher and students’ respondents and an achievement test was utilized to determine the learning difficulty of the students. The respondents of the study consisted of 96 students and the teacher handling them. Frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviation, Linear Regression Analysis were the statistical treatments used to determine the variables in the study. After analyzing and interpreting the data, the following were revealed: majority of the students were female and belonged to the adolescent group. Majority of the second year were 13 years old. Most of their parents belonged to the unemployed/laborer and unskilled category of occupation and had spent 12 years in school finishing only highschool. The students’ attitude towards Algebra were found to be moderately favorable. On their perceptions on teacher’s attitude towards work and their perceptions on teacher’s performance obtained a similar rate of moderately favorable. The following variables were found to be significant on the learning difficulty of the students were: sex; 1* grading GPA; educational attainment of the father; students’ perception on the teacher’s attitude towards work; and students’ perception on teacher’s performance. These variables had a significant effect on the level of difficulty score in Algebra of the students.
