Abstract: TORRES, JOVELLE A. and ANTIC, ANGELITO N. "The Image of the Filipina: A Textual Interpretation of Mita". An undergraduate thesis. Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication major in Journalism. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2002. Adviser: Mrs. Rumina Astudillo-Gil. The study is a textual interpretation of the movie Mila. It determined the different images of the Filipina as depicted in the movie. The objectives were: to determine the major theme of the film; to identify the various attitudes in life of the Filipino women as depicted in the movie; to know the characters and traits of Filipino women in the film; to ascertain the importance of the characters of women in the film; and to find out if there are similarities and differences in the portrayal of different characters of the Filipina in the film. The researchers identified the images of the Filipina as depicted in the movie Mila. After identifying the images as manifested in the scenes, the researchers employed the content analysis forms and thematic table as the research instruments of the study. The content analysis form used in analyzing the content of the film was the same instrument used by Ma. Celeste M. Borsoto (2001) in the thesis entitled "Mga Babae ni Direk: A Comparative Content Analysis on the Films of Carlos Siguion-Reyna and his Portrayal of the Filipino Women as compared to Marilou Diaz-Abaya's Portrayal in her Films and the Way it is Presented in the Philippine Society". The thematic table discussed the character's dialogues where the data were categorized and the critical analysis was presented. This instrument was the most appropriate instrument to use since all the data were laid out, for a relatively easier analysis. The thematic table was the one used by Natalie Rose N. Padua (2001) in her thesis entitled "The Portrayal of Filipino Women in the Contemporary Radio Soap Operas". Because the study was a textual analysis, the audience or the respondents of the study were the researchers themselves.. The different Filipina images that the researchers examined and analyzed were: the Filipina as wife, a member of an extended family, victim of abuses, as a patient teacher, as strong (palaban), as some men submit to their wives an indication of woman's power, as trusting (madaling magtiwala), as loving, as martyr - sign of weakness and etc. were concretely depicted in the movie Mila. Therefore, the movie Mila not only discussed the values, the life and the role of a teacher, but it also discussed the scenes where the different Filipina images were depicted. Therefore, the researchers would like to recommend that the local filmmakers and the scriptwriters must create and conceptualize more films or stories similar to the movie Mila. To the producers, they should produce more films like that of Mila. Also they should be careful in depicting the image of women in films.
