ASUNCION, ANGELICA R. College Placement Examination Performance as Predictor of Scholastic Performance of Students at the College of Engineering and Information Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2013. Adviser: Cecilia B. Banaag, PhD.
The study aimed to predict the academic performance of students at the College of Engineering and Information Technology using their performance score in the college
placement examination. Specifically, it aimed to: (1) determine the performance of the CEIT students in the college placement examination on the following areas: (a) verbal ability, (b) mathematical ability and (c) over-all performance; (2) determine the academic performance of the CEIT students in the following areas: (a) English, (b) Mathematics and (c) GPA; (3) determine the relationship between the following variables: (a) CvSU college placement performance and English performance, (b) CvSU college placement performance and Mathematics performance and (c) CvSU college placement performance and GPA; and (4) determine the predictors of the academic performance in the following areas: (a) English, (b) Mathematics and (c) overall academic performance.
The study used the descriptive-correlational research design. The 206 graduates of
the College of Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT), batch 2011 and 2012
who took the non-licensure courses were the participants of this study. The data needed in support of the study were gathered from the Testing and Admissions Office of the Office of Student Affairs and from the University Registrar. standard deviation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Stepwise Multiple Regression were used as statistical tools. Results revealed that the verbal ability, mathematical ability and overall performance in college placement examination were found to have a negative significant relationship with the criterion variables namely performance in English and Mathematics and overall academic performance. Nonetheless, the overall performance in the placement examination was found to be the best predictor of English and overall academic performance while Mathematical ability performance was found to be the best predictor of academic performance in Mathematics.
