The primary aim of this study was to determine the significant correlates of academic performance in English among Grade II pupils in the District I of Silang. It also sought to determine the predictors of English academic performance.
Six hundred eighty-eight respondents were included in this study which was composed of 324 pupils, 324 parents and 40 Grade II English teachers. Educational qualification of teachers and Leaching experience, educational attainment of parents, study habits, attitudes toward English and English academic performance were the variables studied.
Questionnaires were utilized to know the educational l qualification and Leaching experience of teachers and educational attainment of parents. Study Habits Inventory and Attitude Rating Scale were the instruments used to determine the level of study habits and attitudes toward English of the pupil respondents. Form 137 or the pupils' permanent records were also utilized to determine the English Academic performance of the pupils.
The statistical measures applied were the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and multiple correlation r rid regression analysis. The finding showed that Grade 11 English teachers were educationally qualified and had sufficient number of years in teaching experience. Majority of parents were high school graduate and there were some parents who pursued higher level of education. Most of the pupils had good study habits and majority of them had moderately favorable attitudes toward the subject. Average academic performance of pupils fell under the range of 80-84.
The statistical test showed that the educational attainment of parents, and attitudes of pupils toward English showed significant relationship to English academic performance. No significant relationship was found between English academic performance of -Grade 11 pupils and teachers' educational qualifications, teaching experience and study habits of pupils. Mothers' educational attainment and pupils' attitudes toward English were found to be the predictors of English academic performance.
