Abstract: FLORENTINO, LORIZHILL N. and RELATADO, IVY HANNAH. Risks Encountered by Selected Filipino Journalists in the 2013 Local Elections. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2016. Adviser: Ms. Lady Aileen G. Ambion. This study was conducted to answer the question,"What are the experiences of the Filipino journalists when they encountered risks in the 2013 local elections?" Specifically, it aimed to: identify various risks in the lives of the Filipino journalists in the 2013 local elections; determine the different ways of handling risks encountered during the 2013 local elections; and determine the protocols followed by the journalists before covering news during election period. The participants of the study were 30 selected journalists who covered the 2013 local elections in Laguna. The study was a descriptive research using interview guides for participants to narrate their experiences about the risks they encountered in the coverage. The researchers found out that most of the participants experienced threats in their lives and profession during the 2013 elections. They also experienced being harassed, bribed, blackmailed and manipulated by politicians and their supporters Moreover, journalists can either avoid risks or endure risks that are present. The participants mentioned that as part of the protocol, they should be alert at all times and should let their editor know their location and whom they are talking to. They should treat the risks with composure and presence of mind. Journalists should know their subject very well before asking questions. They should introduce themselves as members of the press. As part of the protocol, first they should apply for Comelec accreditation and should get the side of both parties to report fairly, honestly and objectively.
