GALIT, SHERLYNN P. and REYES, YURICK A. Experimental Investigation on Building Thermal Insulation from Sugar Palm (Arenga Pinnata) Fibre. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Cavite State University. Indang, Cavite. April 2015. Adviser: Engr. Renato B. Cubilla
The main objective of the study was to determine if Sugar Palm (Arenga Pinnata) fibre can be used as an effective thermal insulator. Specifically, it aimed to study the physical and chemical properties of Kaong fibre; to determine the heat insulation performance, water absorption rate and fire performance of Kaong thermal insulator, and to compare its cost of fabrication with the cost of existing insulation products. Aside from the Kaong fibre, aluminum foil and polypropylene in the form of drinking straws were also used for the study.
Different tests were performed in evaluating the insulation properties of the innovated product. These tests include heat resistance test, water absorption test and flame test. The actual performance of the product with doubled thickness was also determined in the study.
With respect to physical properties, Kaong fibre had coarse stiff in texture, brown in color and had a moisture content of 8.92 percent. The Kaong fibre also contains higher ash content, hemicellulose, lignin and strain value compared to other natural fibres. These properties affect the moisture absorption, elongation at break, stiffness and flexibility of the fibre.
When subjected to a comparative test with the commercial product, Kaong thermal insulator has obtained lower inside temperatures. Although the innovative product can insulate heat more, the commercial product carried out better output in maintaining inside temperature since there is a slower rise of temperature readings in a given span of time. Moreover, the product emits minimum amount of smoke, not
intensely propagates fire and does not cause the burning to drip, when subjected to direct flame exposure. Results also showed that the Kaong thermal insulator had absorbed a considerable amount of water. Based on the actual performance of the product to the controlled performed tests, Kaong fibre could be an adept material for thermal insulator application when properly sealed.
